All of North Tahoe’s ski resorts have impressively long seasons, offer lots of options for skiers of different skill levels, and feature some of the most convenient lift system designs in the industry. North Tahoe is centrally located, offering quick and convenient access to the major resorts. For those who don’t enjoy skiing, there are a plethora of other activities for the entire family, including snow shoeing, snow biking, gaming, and more. Northstar at Tahoe Resort
With about 2500 acres of skiable land, a 2,000 foot vertical drop, 350 inches of annual snowfall, a snow making capability of 50%, and 17 lifts, it’s no wonder so many ski enthusiasts love Northstar. With 83 trails, visitors of every age and skill level can find the perfect run. The famous Logger’s Run, a challenging 1.3-mile trail, is a favorite among thrill-seeking skiers. For cross country skiers, there are 40 kilometers of professionally-maintained scenic trails. Northstar is located off of Highway 267, about 10 miles north of Kings Beach.
Alpine Meadows Resort
Powder that stays for weeks after storms and impeccably-maintained runs kept in a condition that exceeds the Olympic standard are some of the things you can expect when you visit Alpine. If you are a novice, Alpine has a world-renowned ski and snowboard school for all ages. Alpine is the perfect place to come for corporate meetings or large family events. This is a resort with many convenient amenities, including numerous lifts, a parking shuttle, and on-mountain equipment storage. Alpine also has a world-renowned terrain park! This fantastic resort is located on Highway 89, about 10 miles south of Truckee. Once you get onto Alpine Road you can’t miss it—just look for the mountain!
Squaw Valley Resort
Squaw Valley USA is a former host of the World Olympics. This fact alone should tell you how extensive and
amazing Squaw Valley’s ski runs are. There are dozens of trails, including the famous 5-mile night run, which is both challenging and enjoyable for skiers of all ages and skill levels. Demos and competitions are common at this world-class resort, as are almost-weekly events of every sort, such as markets and dances. This is one of the most amenity-packed resorts in Tahoe, boasting a legendary cable car that brings visitors to high camp (reached via the Village), several lifts, and plenty of parking. After a day on the slopes, there are numerous attractions at the resort to enjoy, from shopping and concerts to spas, where you can ease some of the aches and pains caused by hours of intense skiing or snowboarding. Squaw Valley is located about 10 miles from Truckee on Highway 89, and is only 6 miles from Tahoe City. Those who are gaming in South Shore can hop on a convenient shuttle that will take them right to the hill.
Homewood Resort
Homewood is famous for excellent snow, breathtaking views of the lake that can be experienced from almost every one of the resort’s 60 runs, and well-maintained snow paths. This is a smaller resort than the other three in the area, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in quality. Homewood receives a whopping 450 inches of annual snowfall and 300 days of sunshine. That translates into great snow coverage and comfortable weather. There are 7 lifts and 60 runs, making Homewood ideal for skiers of every age and skill level. Every run at Homewood rivals those found in any other resort with respect to maintenance and soft powder, but perhaps the greatest perk of visiting Homewood is the amazing views. Homewood is conveniently located a short distance south of Tahoe City on Highway 89.
